BCP Yoshimura Honda Junior Development Team rider Cambell Williamshas added his name to a small select group of juniors that are nudging for podiums in the ultra competitive MX3 category in this year’s all new Pro MX National Motocross Championships. The category being designed to allow our top juniors to race against 16, 17 and 18 year old seniors has been a god-sent for our local motocross scene and the development of young up and coming riders.
Williams on board his BCP Honda CRF250R qualified well at the Rd 4 event being held at Maitland near Newcastle, NSW finishing 8th fastest with a solid pick of the grid for moto 1.
After a good jump out of the gate in the first of two 20 minute plus one lap races Williams slotted into fourth place and held that position until the final lap where a stall of the motorcycle relegated him back to 5th place.
Moto 2 and a start just inside the top 10 saw the New South Welshman climb through the pack to an impressive third place which he would hold until the last half of the last lap. With the final spot on the podium up for grabs on the day Cooper Holroydmade a last lap attempt to pass the Honda rider and made it stick. The pass by Holroyd slotted him into third place in the race and with Cambell Williams finishing in a close 4th place both boys tied for points for the final spot of the MX3 podium on the day.
Moto scores of 7-3 for Holroyd versus 5-4 for Williams was enough to give Holroyd the podium via a points countback.
“Overall it was a really good day,” said Williams.
“I qualified well and knew I had the pace. My starts were decent off the concrete and I was really happy with my pace and fitness.”
“Both races I lost one position on the last lap! Not because I was tired, but I think just getting used to riding with these older guys and their intensity right the way to the chequered flag! I know I belong up here and can’t wait for the next round at Wodonga in 4 weeks.”
After a tough round 1 returning from injury Williams has now climbed up to 8th overall in the points standings.
“It’s so good to see Cambell up where he deserves to be,” said team manager Lee Hogan.
“He works his butt off and is so talented! This shot in the arm of confidence is all he needed to get the ball rolling and I can’t wait to see what he’s got in store for the remainder of the year.”
The next round of the Pro MX series will be held at the Albury/Wodonga circuit Sunday 25th July.
